The best time to visit Zhangjiajie are April through June and September through November, when the anticipated temperatures are from 70°F(21°C) to 80°F(27°C) during the day.
As temperatures climb to as high as 95°F(35°C) with high humidity, the later summer (July through August) in Zhangjiajie is barely tolerable for unaccustomed visitors.
If you're trying to keep your bank account in check, hotel rates and flight fares tend to decrease in the Winter (December to February) as the temperature decrease to 30°F(-1°C).

Least Recommended Time to Visit Zhangjiajie
Zhangjiajie get extremely busy during the following Chinese national holidays
- Chinese Labor's Day: May 1st to May 3rd
- Chinese National Holiday: October 1st to 7th
- Chinese Spring Festival: 7 days somewhere between January 21 to February 20, no fixed dates. In 2020, it starts from January 25th.
If you visit Zhangjiajie during this period, expect hordes of tourists and high room rates. Waiting time in line to tourist sites will usually be more than triple in most cases. Plus, tour guides are easily fully booked. Make your reservation at least one month in advance if you visit Zhangjiajie during these periods.
Zhangjiajie Spring (March - May): Good Time to Visit
Spring in Zhangjiajie means comfortable daily temperatures from 70°F(21°C) to 80°F(27°C). You will need to pack a few light layers in March, though, as temperatures could drop to 32°F(0°C) in the day in early March. You could expect the green and blooming Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
Zhangjiajie Summer (June - August): Hot and Crowded
The months between June and August are the busiest and hottest of the year in Zhangjiajie. The temperature could rise to 100°F(38°C) in July. Most schools will have their Summer Holiday from middle July to later August, when it will be the most popular period for Chinese to travel within the country. Be prepared to wait for hours to take the cable to Tianmen Mountain from downtown Zhangjiajie.
Zhangjiajie Autumn (September - November): Best Time to Visit
This is the most popular time to visit. Temperatures rest at a comfortable 75°F(24°C), and the threat of rain is much less prevalent after September. However, you won't be the only one hoping to score some time in Zhangjiajie. Be prepared for inflated hotel rates and limited availability (hotels and local tour guide) – in fact, you should make your reservations at least one month in advance to ensure the availability.
Note: China's National Holiday or the Chinese Golden Week will be from October 1st to October 7th each year, it is almost impossible to avoid crowds during this period in Zhangjiajie. But you could skip this period if possible.
Zhangjiajie Winter (December - February): Best Time to Save Money and Avoid Crowds
Winter is a great time for bargain hunting, as the crowds disperse. However, be prepared for lower temperatures. Average wintertime temps range from 70°F(21°C) to 20°F(-6°C). It is anticipated for some snow days during this period. Pack some warmer layers to fight the cold.
