Where to hold a panda in China?

The facilities in Chengdu are the only locations in the world where you can hold a giant panda.

There are three panda bases in Chengdu offering panda holding program:
Dujiangyan Panda Base
Wolong Panda Reserve
Bifengxia Panda Base

The most common and popular location for panda holding is Dujiangyan Panda Base or called Dujiangyan Panda Valley for its closest distance to Chengdu City, about 1½ hrs. by car.

What is the panda holding program?

Panda holding program in Dujiangyan allows you to hold a panda for about 60-100 seconds and take pictures with them.

What to Expect

Here are the processes you can expect:
1. Sign up and pay the panda-holding fee
2. Put on the required blue scrubs and plastic covers over your hands and shoes for sanitation purposes.
3. Sat down on a designated bench
4. Your friends or family or the staff take photos of you with the panda.

If you want to do more than just hold a panda, you can also participate in the volunteer program where you get to feed pandas, make panda cakes and clean their enclosures.

The Cost

It costs CNY1,800 per person, about USD 260 (updated in Oct 2018) to cuddle a baby panda for about 60 seconds. The price is constantly rising.

Payment is made in cash only, and there are no ATM’s on the facility.

The experience is not cheap. Think of it in this way, there is literally no other place where you can wrap your arm around the cutest creature in the world, and only 20 tourists are allowed to hold a panda and take close-up photos with it each day. The money will be donated to help preserve these endangered animals.

Tips

1. On the day of visiting the base, it is advisable not to wear any heavy smelling deodorants, creams, or perfumes as giant pandas are very sensitive to smell.

2. Please do not make noises or sudden movements that might startle the pandas.

3. The panda holding program is occasionally suspended. You’d better check with us before you go there.

Do you need to make a reservation?

Only 20 visitors are allowed to hold a baby panda. You are highly recommended to book the panda holding program at least two weeks in advance. If you need any further information or assistance, please let us know.

How to get to Dujiangyan Panda Base?

The panda base is about 67 kilometers (41 miles) from Chengdu and it takes about 1½ hours by car. There are no direct buses from Chengdu City to Dujiangyan Panda Base. The most convenient and time-saving way to get there is to take a private tour with a private car and driver.

If you wish to go alone, you can take the intercity high-speed train from Chengdu Railway Station or take a coach from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station or Beimen Bus Station and get down in Dujiangyan, about half an hour. And then take a taxi to the panda base.
